I have VA benefits. Should I enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B?
“The VA encourages you to consider enrolling in Medicare as soon as you’re eligible because Medicare and VA benefits don’t work together – and you may have to pay a penalty if you end up enrolling in Medicare later.” From https://www.medicare.org/articles/do-you-need-medicare-if-you-have-va-benefits
The VA health program provides comprehensive coverage for services and supplies related to medical care, including preventive services, hospital care, mental health care, and outpatient care. Medicare Part A covers hospital care, skilled nursing care, and hospice care. Medicare Part B covers doctor’s services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
VA health care benefits and Medicare work together to provide veterans with the best coverage possible. If you have both VA health care benefits and Medicare, you can receive care from both providers. In some cases, Medicare may pay for services that the VA does not cover, such as long-term care or certain medical equipment. In other cases, the VA may pay for services that Medicare does not cover, such as prosthetic devices, eyeglasses, and hearing aids. Still unclear? Contact us!
Can I have Medicare benefits and still receive health care services at VA?
Yes. In addition, Veterans may be able to receive both VA and Medicare benefits if they qualify for both. This is known as "dual eligibility." Dual eligibility may provide Veterans with access to a wider range of healthcare services than either program could provide on its own. We can help. Call us!
I have VA benefits and am enrolled in Medicare Parts A & B. Is that enough?
When you are enrolled in Medicare Parts A & B your healthcare options are increased. You can now select Medicare Plans that allow you to use doctors and facilities outside the VA and closer to home. You may also be eligible for additional benefits such as prescription drug coverage, vision and dental care, and other supplemental coverage. Additionally, you can enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, which combines your Part A and Part B coverage with additional benefits such as vision and dental care. Contact us for more details.
I have VA benefits. Do I also need a Part D prescription drug plan?
There are some prescription drugs not on the VA formulary. A Part D plan may cover some of the cost of your medications, depending on the plan you choose, that the VA may not cover.
